Gorge into a mouth-watering bite of the famous Philly Cheesesteak!
It is an appetizing sandwich where the butter-garlic rubbed toasted hoagie roll fill with pan-seared beef slices mixed with sweet caramelized onion and melting provolone cheese.
The traditional way to prepare the Philly Cheesesteak is to use Philadelphia’s local Amoroso roll and cook on a girdle. Nonetheless, this recipe is a gourmet treat.
No Rush
Ingredients
1 pack of 60g beef slices
2 hoagie rolls (sliced in the middle lengthwise about 3/4 portion leaving one end attached)
1 Tbsp unsalted butter (softened)
½ tsp garlic (minced)
2 Tbsp olive oil (divided)
1 medium-sized yellow onion (diced)
Salt & pepper (to taste)
4 provolone cheese slices (mild variety)
1-2 Tbsp mayonnaise (optional)
Directions
Firstly, prepare the meat. Soak the beef slices in a bowl filled with water for 20 minutes. Then, drain the water and slice them thinly using a sharp knife. Keep aside.
Spread the softened butter on the inner sides of the rolls and sprinkle the minced garlic. Toast the mixture on the inner sides of the rolls and toast the bread on a large pan over medium heat till golden browned. Remove into a dish.
Heat the oil (1 Tbsp) in the same pan. Add the diced onions and cook for 10-14 mins over medium heat by stirring frequently. When the onions soften and have caramelized edges, remove them into a dish while leaving the oil in the pan.
Drizzle one tablespoon oil again, and heat it over a medium-high flame.
Lay the thin beef slices on the hot pan in a single layer. Let it cook for 1-2 minutes undisturbed before sprinkling salt & pepper. Then, stir fry for another 1-2 minutes till the meat cook.
Now, adjust heat to low and stir in the caramelized onions.
Next, place the provolone cheese slices on top and turn off the stove after 30 seconds. The cheese will melt in the pan’s residual heat.
Lastly, stuff each butter-garlic toasted hoagie roll with the cheesy beef.
Recipe Note
Your “Philly Cheesesteak” is ready! Enjoy right away with some mayonnaise!
Tips
Besides provolone, you can use cheese whiz or white American cheese. Provolone adds a sharp flavor while cheese whiz is creamier in taste. You can also add diced bell peppers and mushrooms with the onions.
